I’m still adjusting to my life back from vacation… you know? the life where I actually have to make dinner, clean my apartment and tend to my children without the help of extended family!
But I wanted to jot down a few key memories of the week, so here goes:
Exersaucer!!
How did pioneer women live without all of the wonderful baby contraptions we have on the market these days? My personal favorite--- the Exersaucer! It is absolutely amazing. Megan and Criswell graciously dug their “circle of neglect” as they termed it, out of storage for baby Grant to enjoy. And boy, has he enjoyed it! He will sit/stand for up to 45 minutes! He’s thoroughly entertained and I couldn’t be more thrilled about that.
Ritz cracker incident
Just one more reason why Sunday is not my favorite day of the week. It’s not that I don’t enjoy church. It’s just that I have trouble enjoying church while juggling three kids, minus my hubby. Well, this past Sunday I was just about to pat myself on the back as the closing hymn began. We had made it through without any embarrassing outbursts or run away toddlers! I started gathering up crayons and crackers scattered all over the floor, while Grant lay nestled against the back of the bench. Without my eye on him, I didn’t realize that Dane had decided to feed the little guy a ritz cracker. You can imagine my anxiety when I discovered the act! I performed the heimlich maneuver during the closing prayer and let’s just say I was pretty shaken up!
Top of the morning to ye
I had some pretty amazing roommates in collage-- and we remained roommates for most of my years at BYU. One of those lovely ladies had a saying that she would belt out in the morning --always in an Irish accent- always while doing an Irish jig. It was pretty funny back then. It’s still funny when I think about it. So, “top of the morning to ye” will always be a favorite greeting of mine.
On St. Patrick’s Day, Evelyn was about as festive as any little red headed child could ever possibly be. Dressed in green from head to toe (all her idea, I might add!) I cannot begin to tell you how many people asked me if she was Irish. Now, we run into a lot of people everywhere we go in Brooklyn— many of them strangers. These strangers are very interested in giving advice, asking questions and just becoming involved in general! So, I thought it would be funny to teach her the phrase, “top of the morning to ye” as a greeting she could communicate throughout the day. And it was funny because the girl just looks so Irish and is such a little ham. She played the part well. All except the jig. That part needs some work.
Sleep training
Need I say more? 7 nights down and finally he sleeps through the night! Although it’s only been one night of solid sleep, so I shouldn’t count my blessings quite yet.
A friend found this card for me and I laughed quite hard. I’m not sure if it’s really that funny, or if I’m just so sleep deprived that everything is funny at the moment.
Blurping the blog
I printed my blog and I LOVE it! Highly recommend this! The website is:
I printed my blog back in 2008 as well, but didn’t take the time I should have. This year I set aside more time to organize the layouts myself, instead of letting the software do it---and I’m so pleased with the result.
The Golden Rule
Last night I was pretty frustrated with Evy and Dane. They were messing around and talking loudly, laughing, getting out of bed… the works. Then I heard Dane really getting upset and so I headed back to discipline their behavior. But as I approached their door, I decided to stop and listen to what they were saying. And I don’t know why I decided to do that, but I’m pretty glad I did. Evelyn was explaining the Golden Rule to Dane. Spot on, really. “Dane, Jesus wants us to treat each other nicely. And that’s what makes Him happy. When you treat someone with love, then that’s the way you want to be treated and that’s the right way to do it. It’s the Golden Rule. Ok, buddy?”
It was so sweet that I decided to turn around and skip the disciplining for the night.
Dane at the park-- it was 65 degrees out!
