Those who know Blake well, understand that he is not a man who enjoys the theatre. When I told him I wanted to see “Phantom” for my birthday, his reply was, “ with me?” And he was serious! I wish I had taken the time to write down the funny statements he’s made over the years during shows that we’ve attended. During a standing ovation a few shows back he uttered, “I’m only standing because it will get me closer to the door.”
Alas, I’ve stopped torturing him, for the most part, and now he is only required to attend one Christmas show with me each year. That is our compromise, and it works well. We have plenty of other activities that we share in common- and I attend shows with my family or girlfriends.
This year, I ordered tickets well in advance, and the night before Thanksgiving we saw the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Hall- featuring the Rockettes. I’ve always wanted to see this show- and it was absolutely wonderful! If you ever happen to be in New York City during the Christmas season- I highly recommend it. Truly, even Blake was impressed…I could tell!
Just the realization that this show has played for so long and is an iconic part of New York City history- made it a night to remember. As we walked out, Blake said, “well, that was definitely a once in a lifetime evening.” I was thinking the same thing; but then I puzzled, it was a little too good to be true that Blake would actually admit to enjoying a show. And sure enough, he was quick to add “and I hope that it stays that way-- once in my lifetime.” I’ve said it before, I know my husband well. It’s a good thing he has so many other appealing qualities and characteristics. I actually look forward to listening to his banter- it’s always a crack up.
