Today

Today I spent a fortune on a babysitter for Grant and Dane.

PS 10 did not have enough chaperones for their scheduled farm field trip.  A field trip Evelyn was very much looking forward to attending.

I boarded a bus full of rowdy, and LOUD 5 and 6-year-olds.  We headed over an hour to a farm in Queens, of all places. I sat between Evelyn and a few peers towards the front of the bus—the ride was bumpy and I quickly became car sick. Did I mention, the children were rowdy and LOUD?

We saw a lot of this….

and this...

It was hot and humid

The children moaned and complained and Ms. Sandy responded in her typical Brooklyn-ite manner, “… in life you’ll get hungry, hot and sweaty, so just deal.”  this said with very little sympathy. Ms. Sandy cracks me up.

The tour lady was quite mean;  Sandy and I exchanged looks every time she snapped harshly at the children.

It's plain to see- K116 children were fascinated by this farm!

One child became sick and threw up. Another got in trouble for kicking.  This trip sounding fun to anyone?

On the way home, there was a mix up with the other bus.  Sandy sent me to check out the problem.  When I returned, Evelyn was seated at the front of the bus with her dear friend Taloula.  I passed by, smiled and squeezed her hand.  I didn’t want to be a clingy mom—or ask her move to the back with me… but I was bummed.   So I walked down the isle and found a nice quiet spot towards the back of the bus;   I sat down and prepared for the hour long ride back.

But very happily, not more than a moment later, who should join me, but my cute little red head!  All of her own accord. It warmed my heart.  Now the windows were down, the afternoon breeze was refreshing.  Much quieter in the back of the bus;  the sun was shining—absolutely no traffic.  Evelyn was asleep—her head on my lap.
And as we drove home,  I distinctly realized that all the hassle—every last bit of it, was most certainly worth my efforts to spend this time with my sweet little girl.
