Where do I start? Waaaaay back in November, when party preparations were unfolding for Evelyn, my sweet little Dane Edward Marston came up to me with wide eyes and curious commentary…. wondering about his own future birthday celebration. Specifically, he wondered if he'd be allowed a "friend" birthday party, rather than the typical "family" parties we had tried so desperately to sway our children into deciding upon in years past. And I could tell, right from the start, that a friend party was very important this year to my boy. So plans were made, cake was ordered, goodie bags prepped, invites sent out. It was a process. I've found that hosting a friend party with eons of children tends to take away from my peace of mind and ability to make my birthday child feel special and important on his/her big day. But as it was very important to Dane, I figured I'd do my best…and hope to be able to create a balance!
I must say, it helped very very much to have Grandma and Grandpa as assistants! Tending to Anna, picking up pizza, running party games. Such a help! Also helped to have Blake as head coach. He did a fabulous job running drills, games and a cute little soccer match. This was Dane's dream come true! He just LOVES soccer right now. And he's excellent at it and wanted to be able to play a big game with his friends. I think his heart was full as his little dreams were realized! And that's saying nothing of all the fun presents to open after the game! We had about 15 kids in total and all were very well behaved. Running around for an hour in the heat probably helped make for a calm second hour inside eating pizza and cake and playing more quiet types of games.
It's always bitter sweet for me, celebrating birthdays for my children. I'm so thrilled for them and so happy that they are growing up, becoming more independent and fun! And yet, it seems to be happening so quickly-- which is frightening! it makes me wonder am I teaching them all I should be teaching them? Am I taking full advantage of their time at home? Etc, etc!!! This year, Dane has matured more than words can describe. Just the fact that he's a big kindergartner, that he's moved past hot wheels to Legos, that he is very much into social, all speak volumes about his development. He continues to be the sweetest boy and most loving child I could ever imagine. I think his little party turned out perfectly and I was happy to shed blood, sweat and tears over the whole thing in order to witness his extreme joy and happiness on this day.
he woke to favorite cereal and gold medal/trophy...by request.
proof that soccer and Valentine's decor do in fact mix
