Evelyn's Birthday

Can't believe we have a fourteen year old in the house!  Evelyn is growing up so quickly and it's been quite the journey! She's always been so very independent, feisty, stubborn, creative and intelligent.  These qualities will serve her well in life and clearly- already have!  But parenting a smart, creative, stubborn spit fire is not the easiest task and we've had our bumps along the road.  But when all is said and done, I admire Evelyn with all my heart and I'm so grateful for the person she is and the young lady she is becoming.  Loved being a part of her Young Women in Excellence this month and having a few moments to tell the group how much she means to me and how proud I am of her talents and hard work.  Evelyn has grown incredibly social this past year and loves to meet at the mall with her friends, or at Seaworld, or at our house, the movies, the football games- you name it.  Friends are important to her! Love to watch Evelyn and Anna together.  They are so close and love one another very much. Just this past month, Evelyn choreographed a dance from "The Greatest Showman" for she and Anna to dance.  They are hilarious together.  Evelyn and I have so much in common, despite our many differences.  We love music, theatre, baking.  We both LOVE memes and I love when she texts me memes throughout the day.  It's how we bond.  For Evelyn's birthday, we went to the mall and she picked out two sweaters.  She had forfeited all other birthday gifts for a bigger present she'll receive in December.  After shopping, she invited her buddies over for dinner and roasting s'mores... then we all headed over to the Performing Arts Center to watch the Nutcracker ballet.  Such a fun evening and Evelyn enjoyed being with her friend and playing games, snacking, laughing, photo-boothing! I enjoyed reading on Instagram what a few friends had written about her.  Very sweet.  And of course, Ev had the greatest time ever at  Disneyland with Grandma and Grandpa as their birthday gift to her.  She LOVES Disneyland at Christmas time and this was such a fun day.  Happy Birthday Ev!!!  An excerpt from her journal:

Evelyn, you’ve grown so much this year! You are 5 foot 2 inches, and have a darling little figure.  You are beautiful in every way- from your big blue eyes and fair skin, to your gorgeous long red hair.  You continue to do well in school and rarely find much of anything to be a challenge.  Math is probably your most difficult subject, but you love your math teacher this year, so you are doing well and getting impressive scores on all of your work!  Reading and writing are your biggest strengths.  You love to read and can read quickly.  Your Lexia level is so high that you can only read classics to be considered in your range of reading comprehension.  It’s very impressive. You have grown very social over the year and enjoy spending time with your theatre friends.  You love having them come over to spend the night.  You like to plan parties for them and make treats and think of fun adventures.  Recently you planned a “Fall Day” where the girls came over for chili and pumpkin bread, you went to a pumpkin patch, carved the pumpkins, drank hot chocolate and then we went to the Scream Zone for the Haunted Hayride.  It was super fun and you loved it so much.  You enjoy holidays and celebrating with all of your heart.  You love decorating for Halloween and Christmas.  You love Christmas music and spooky activities.  You are still 100 percent invested in music— piano, voice, musical theatre, acting.  These activities are your entire world.  Last year you were cast as Belle in Beauty and the Beast and you did a phenomenal job!  You were only a 7th grader- and typically the lead goes to 8th graders… but you really did an excellent job.  This year, you are Ariel in the Little Mermaid.  You are very excited because you get to “fly” in the play.  You are typically a very private person and don’t like to talk to Dad or I too much about the happenings in your life.  It is super hard on me, but I give you your space for sure.  You have let go of hobbies you enjoyed in the past— crafting, baking… every once in a while you will bake, but it’s not at the forefront as it used to be.  You love to listen to music and introduce plenty of songs to our family.  You love your voice teacher- Kara Howard- and enjoy learning from her.  You are eager to advance to MiaMaids at church!  You continue to love amusement parks and roller coasters.  This year, you started visiting Sea World on your own- with your buddies!  It has been so fun for you to hang out with friends and be more independent.  I love watching how excited you are about these things! But at the same time, I get sad at the thought of you growing up so quickly.  You are very intelligent and have a lot of ideas about how the world should work.  I love talking with you about politics and/or religion because you are curious and inquisitive and yet also have a very set moral compass and direction.  A couple boys at church and at school have a crush on you, but you are very much uninterested in boys and flirting is something you would never stoop to.  You are super fashionable and yet couldn’t be bothered with designer labels… you just know what looks good and you put outfits together without worrying about the brand or designer.  This year we traveled to Tucson over New Year’s.  We traveled to Scottsdale in the spring for baseball spring training. We camped a few times, attended a family reunion in Central WA with the Stevens family, then spent a lot of time in Seattle visiting with our cousins and Grammy and Papa.  We traveled to Pismo beach with Aunt J and our cousins.  You had to miss a few trips we took during spring break and winter break— because of your play!  Next year you will be in high school and will say goodbye to Classical Academy.  We will miss it, but it will be nice to have you close by and on the same school schedule as everyone else- here at Poway High.  Some highlights of your year:  attending Abigail’s show (youtube singer) and getting to meet her in person afterwards! Reading almost all of the Harry Potter and Twilight books. Surfing in Pismo,  playing Belle and Ariel in your school plays, surfing in Pismo, Universal Studios and Disneyland trips and of course Sea World WITHOUT parents!

Evelyn, I adore everything about you!  You truly are one in a million.  I’m so proud of the person you are becoming and the responsibility you show in all that you do.  You are talented, intelligent, curious, kind and fun to be with.  We are so blessed to have you as the big sis in our family!  Love you !
