"you're doing a good job!"

Evelyn learned about community workers in school.  Bus drivers, firemen, construction crews, and of course, police men.  Her teacher mentioned that if the children were to see any of these community workers in person- they might consider saying,   “You’re  doing a fine job,”  as they happened by.  Evelyn took this teaching to heart—and I hope this story won’t shock anyone- but we are talking about Brooklyn here. There are many policemen everywhere we go.  And on our way home from school last week, we spotted two police men about to break into a home (probably a drug bust.) They were very focused on the door and following their protocol.  I was struggling with Dane, and therefore  unable to stop Evy until it was too late.

She yelled out- “Excuse me…. you’re doing a good job!”  Unfortunately, these men did not hear my darling girl. So she quickly said it again, even louder.  “You’re doing a good job!”  This time she had managed to distract the policemen.  They smiled and waved back.  It was an interesting exchange and  moment for me. One that I’m not sure I’d experience anywhere but here in this big city.

Oh- and Evelyn has a new nick-name for Dane.  She now calls him “son” as that is what Blake calls Dane.  It’s very cute to hear her say, “now, son… don’t take my juice box while I run to the bedroom.”  I don’t correct her because it’s too funny.
