Today at church the children participated in a Christmas program. I had overheard Evelyn talking with the singing leader (my friend, S) the day prior:
S: "Evelyn-- are you excited to dress up as a shepherd tomorrow?"
E: "No- I don't want to."
Me: embarrassedly, "oh, sure you do-- wait until you see the costume"
I figured she'd go with the flow once she saw the other children in her class dressing up, so I didn't bother to address the topic further-- and I sent her down to primary. When she resurfaced an hour later, I noticed that ALL of the other children her age were dressed as shepherds, but she was dressed as an angel.
Me: "Evelyn, what's going on? Where's your shepherd costume?"
Her quick response:
"Moooom, I don't look like a shepherd.. I'm pretty, like an angel."
My inner dialogue: "Hmmm... Is there any way I might get out of parenting this little girl when she turns into a teenager?"
She's a little too determined and a little too high maintance!
