When it comes to naming your child, I believe that there are two very different camps. There are those parents who name a child the name in which they fully intend to call that child. Then, there are those parents who name a child with the idea that they will shorten this name, or provide the child with a nickname. Blake comes from the first camp, and I from the second. If you look at our siblings names and then our own, you will find the case in point. For example, the Marston side: Blake, Troy, and Stacy- always known as Blake, Troy and Stacy. Stevens' side: Stephanie, (almost always referred to as "Steph" or "Stephy"; Jamie Jo, (referred to as "JJ" or "J", or the occasional "J-bird"), Michelle ("Micky") ... you get the idea.
So, when it came to naming our children, Blake and I had a few differing opinions. I won out on Evelyn. We would name our daughter Evelyn and call her Evy. Perfect! Then Dane came along. Those on my side of the family questioned... "what will you call him for short?" They were extremely perplexed. It was true, there really are no good nicknames for Dane. It's a very short name; also, he's a boy and so adding a /y/ to the end would sound a bit feminine. So, his name would be Dane.
Well, Dane's been alive for all of 5 and 1/2 months and leave it to his two year old sister to provide him with a nickname! I think it's pretty funny and I laugh every time I hear her say it... in fact, I hear myself say it sometimes and laugh!
He is referred to now as "Damey-o". I'll explain: Dame, rather than Dane, because that is what Evy has always believed his name to be. Then, the suffix came about as she applied our nickname for Daddy (Daddy-o) to Dane's name. So... there you have it! For those who believed that Dane would never have a nickname... I give you ~ Damey-o.
