1st Annual "We love to be a family" Day!

I'm always on the search for fun new family traditions and I found a winner a few months ago! One of my favorite websites (Power of Moms) detailed a yearly tradition in which the family spends a day together doing all sorts of great activities- each one listed on a treasure map complete with paper heart clues.  I loved the idea and knew it would be a hit with the kids.... they love scavenger hunts and treasure maps!

The prep work was simple and easy! I just used a trader joe's grocery bag cut wide open;   Evelyn and I picked seven activities that our family enjoys doing together. I wrote out a little poem for each activity and then hid the hearts around the house for the kids to find and place on the map-- each clue detailing the next activity.  The only hiccup we experienced was a rain storm!  A few outdoor activities needed to be changed to indoor activities!  But that was no problem, we did an indoor picnic on the living room floor instead of a picnic at the park.  And we went to go see the new Lego Movie instead of a family basketball game.... easy fixes.  The kids were absolutely thrilled and loved every minute of our special day.  They are already asking about next year's 2nd annual "we love to be a family" day!

Other activities included:  1. making Herb's Hunks 2. ding dong ditching 3. playing dictionary 4. mad libs 5. movie night with a fun popcorn bar

You can see these activities were not expensive or difficult to execute.... it was all simple, easy but fun stuff.  A great way to spend the one free Saturday we had in the middle of basketball and soccer season!

We've had a lot of problems with harsh words exchanged between Evelyn and Dane.... Dane will tease, Evelyn will lash out in return!  It's a vicious cycle.  So this month our family nights have focused on the effects of saying mean things, harsh tone, angry attitude.  Also... what can we do to replace the mean words... what can we say/do when we are angry or in the middle of an argument?  I'm hoping some of this will rub off on them!  They definitely know how to push each other's buttons!!! But it's good to have these visual reminders up all week and to reference them when in the midst of a heated moment!
