Update on Evelyn

My firstborn has had a few very exciting events to report on! As she's rounding the corner....almost at the end of her third grade year, I've noticed so much growth and maturity!  Activities that keep her busy include: voice lessons, gymnastics, a chorus group, Activity Days at church and volleyball!  I have absolutely loved the newfound dedication she's demonstrated towards singing as of late.  I think voice lessons has been the catalyst.  I mean, the girl practices from the moment she walks in the door from school, until the very moment she falls asleep at night.  I would say, the moment her head hits the pillow.... but that just isn't so!  Because she continues singing even after her head hits that pillow...and goes on and on until she finally konks out. (And I do mean finally!)

Last month Evelyn was asked to sing in church and she did a lovely job.  She sang "He Sent His Son" at the mic... a solo! It was so sweet.  As she practiced the week before, she would belt out each note, and work on singing vibrato at the end of each phrase.  It was dramatic, it was show-y!  It sounded very nice.  But as the morning of approached,  I gave her a little tip that she took to heart.  I told her how beautiful the melody and lyrics of this song were-- how they perfectly described the Savior's mission and life!  I mentioned that she didn't really need to put on a show with her beautiful voice....the people in the congregation would feel the spirit so much as she sang in just a peaceful, gentle, child's voice.  This was, after all, a primary song.  And later that day.... that is exactly what she did.  Her little voice is so strong as it is, without all of the extra pizazz!   It was perfect and she enjoyed very much all of the praise that came her way and the touching comments people made.  After church she asked if she could do it again soon!

Later in the month, Evelyn was asked by her voice teacher (and our good friend!) Jessica, if she would like to sing on Channel Six news!  Ev was beyond excited.  And mostly because it would be her favorite song...."Let it Go" from Frozen.  Evelyn knows this song inside out and was not in the least bit nervous to compete with three other girls in a little contest for first prize!  The segment was darling and in the end the news broadcasters couldn't decide on a winner, so they picked a name from a hat to determine who would win the prize....lucky Ev won! It was such a fun morning and she enjoyed showing her friends and telling everyone about her experience afterwards.  We are so grateful to Jessica for allowing her that wonderful experience!

Evelyn has also had the opportunity to be a part of the demo team (Superstars) at her gymnastics club the past few months.  They had their first performance this month and again, Ev was thrilled.  She later said that she loves having everyone watch her and clap after she's performed. She wants ALWAYS to do this!  I have no doubt this girl will go far in the drama department later in life.  As for now, we have enough on our plate...and by "we" I really mean "me".   Because if it were up to Evelyn, she'd be busy 8 days a week!!

Lately, I've cracked down on small behaviors I've noticed that cannot continue in the Marston home (as I explained to her one evening).  Impatience with Dane and Grant, not helping out when needed, and even a slight attitude problem!  Ev was shocked one evening when I told her that I would't be taking her to gymnastics that night.  "WHY?"  she cried out in dismay.  "Because I only take children who treat their family with love and kindness to special activities.... it's a privilege in this home.  And by the way... you can pack your own lunch for tomorrow!"  Let's just say,  it didn't take long for Evelyn to work on these little issues and I'm so pleased with the results!!

I do love that little girl of mine. She is special and unique and lovely.  She can be moody and impatient at times.... and I can't imagine who she inherited that impatience from-- ha!  But she is wonderful and I'm so proud of the person she is.
